Moksha board game
Art direction by Paul Kepple
Moksha is a Sanskrit word referring to release from the cycle of death and rebirth; it is a central concept of many Hindu traditions. Using the rich visual vocabulary and cultural history of South Asia as a starting point, I created Moksha: The Game of Good Karma, a unique and functional board game. As players roll, they collect karma which determines the difficulty of gameplay in the next reincarnation ring, and each move affects the next in the search for enlightenment.
The process involved meticulous research, rule creation, game testing, design and illustration, and finally execution of the physical pieces. The finished product includes a stained, laser-etched wood box with cover and instructions, two connecting halves of a tiered game board, stackable player pieces, and three types of cards.
